Steve Pateman is one of Australia's champion jumps jockey who has become the first rider to win four successive Grand National hurdles. He's been a jumps jockey for over 15 years and a proud StrideFree® jumps ambassador.
Steve started out in showing and eventing as his Mother and sister bred and showed ponies. He then got a summer holiday job at Lindsay Park for Peter Hayes when he was 16 and he never returned home.
Spreading his rides across Ireland, UK, America, Czech Republic & NZ, Steve's most memorable win was the Warrnambool Grand Annual, in 2011 on Al Garhood, trained by friend Ciaron Maher, owned by the Maher family. When comparing the different countries races, he explains "American hurdle racing is similar to Australia however they have timber racing, with minimum 3 miles and over solid timber fences. UK & Ireland race on mostly soft ground from 2 mile to 4 1/2 mile. Their traditional hurdles are a similar size to Australia but their steeplechase fences are a lot bigger and less forgiving than Australian fences.
“I believe that a thoroughbreds stride length is so important and the StrideFree® allows horses to gallop and even jump with comfort. Half tree or poor fitting saddles have to affect stride length.”
