Our lives are so busy these days. The worldwide economy has evolved dramatically over the last 70 to 80 years. The population grows by roughly 75 million people per year and estimates put the global population figure at around 8.6 billion by the year 2030. Our world is growing rapidly. Our lives are hectic; jobs = less time to enjoy things = pressure to get mundane tasks accomplished quickly. We now live in the twilight zone where waiting for things is becoming less and less common. We do most things online We live in a world where right now means 3 seconds ago and having to wait means less than a minute for a transaction to occur; such as a purchase, a phone call… making acquaintances. How many people assume they know a person or need to know as much about a person entirely from a first encounter?
Our world is filled with demands and commands…of “When do we want it- Now!” and “Why on earth is it taking so long?!” We want faster broadband. Faster cars. Faster queuing times at the bank… the list is endless. There are so many day-to-day chores that we feel we should not have to wait to complete- which is true isn’t it? After all ‘Time is Money!’ IBIS World states that online sales have increased dramatically in the last 5 years due to an acceptance of the modern way people choose to purchase goods. In Australia, there has been a growth of 14.6% between 2011 and 2016 of online sales and 44,429 businesses are now online.
So what does all this mean? Purchasing something online cuts out the middle man. It means that we can order things- majority of the time with next day delivery- or schedule things to happen when we need them to. For example, buying shopping from the supermarket online. Customers can enjoy a door to door service set at a time when it is convenient to them. Waiting is incredibly rare and even the physical experience of buying something means that we tick that off in our head- job done. We can move on.
So what happens when we want something special, made just for us? What happens when that item does not exist out in the world right now and has to be created to meet our needs and desires? What happens when we have to wait?
1. a period of waiting; pause, interval, or delay.
2. serving or being in attendance: waiting man; waiting maid
3. in waiting, in attendance, as upon a royal personage.
Although waiting seems to be something negative in today’s society, waiting can actually be a good thing. When an item is as special to us- an investment of our time and money; Something we will use time and time again and improve the quality of our lives, or the lives of those around us, waiting does not seem so terrible at all. Waiting signifies the art of taking time to create. Time to perfect. Time to enhance. When something is as special as, for example, a saddle- where the only the perfect leather and only the perfect fit will do, taking that time is important. At Peter Horobin Saddlery, there are three options.
Saddles Straight From the PHS Workshop Ready Made
From a consumer’s point of view, waiting might not necessarily be the best option. If you need a saddle quickly, or if you have had a fitting and tried a saddle, there is the potential to take the saddle home that day, fitted for you and your horse. If the adjustments can be done on site, then we cut out the waiting period altogether.
However, if you can wait, or if you need to because the saddle that is right for you has not been created yet and you are looking for something custom made to you- with your measurements and the horse’s specific requirements in mind, there is a 6-8 week wait for something beautiful….just for you.
hose of you looking to purchase something made with brilliant design tailored specifically to your aesthetic vision, then 8-12 weeks is your waiting period. Your patience will be truly rewarded, however, with something crafted with your measurements and the horse’s in mind, as well as the colour of stitching and piping too.
So what do these processes mean- "Why do I have to wait?"...I hear you ask. Well at PHS the period of time in between ordering a saddle and finally taking it home is special and can only be described as a secret luxury for the customer.
There is an intriguingly secret art to waiting for things. Another world- a whole other world of waiting for special things to come into our lives which enriches us and improves us in one way or another. It begins when we understand exactly what it is we are waiting for- the importance of the object, for example, to us and to our needs. Consider the time, the effort, the craftsmanship that it takes to make your special request. By waiting, you can expect to feel excitement, anticipation, nerves. Your investment takes time so that it is perfect and right for you and your horse. By rushing, as all of us tend to do every day in just about every other aspect of our lives, we run the risk of not enjoying or appreciating the piece of art that will soon sit upon your horse. So invoke the secret art of waiting. Enjoy the time it takes. Do not worry, or panic that it is not there faster. Revel in the fact that what is coming to you is for you- just for you and no one else. There may be several other saddles of the same ‘model’ out there- but none quite like yours. Think about the process of saddle making and know that someone, somewhere, is taking considered time and effort to create a masterpiece crafted from the finest leathers that will fit your horse like a glove and provide a close partnership between you and your horse.
