"I think that the new stride free saddles are amazing! The fact that they can allow the horses to move freely and stretch out to the maximum without any restriction really helps my job. I knew this the first time I ever rode in one when I piloted Charmed Harmony to victory at Caulfield just recently."
At PHS we like to celebrate many firsts! Ambassadors are extremely important to us, because like our core values of our business we like to align ourselves with like minded equine enthusiasts who, when working together, help spread the word about equine back health through top quality saddles and saddle fit.
With celebrating being in business for 30 years this year, Peter is using his wealth of knowledge in equine biomechanics and has applied this to a NEW saddle concept in the racing industry. Re-inventing the wheel and focusing on the importance of equine back health in racing, StrideFree is the result of many years of research and learning from equine professionals all over the world!
In Australia PHS were the first company to sponsor the first female rider Glennis Barry who represented our country on an international level at the World Cup Dressage. Now we would like to introduce another 'female first' to the PHS legacy wall.
Katelyn Mallyon is a part of the female jockey revolution, being the very first female jockey in history to win the Victorian Apprentice title twice, her gorgeous, passionate and ambitious nature allows her to continue to succeed on and off the track.
Recently showcased on channel 7's segment of 'The female Jockey Revolution' 'Sunday Night' this girl might be young but has a heart as big and strong as Pharlap.
At 21 years of age Katelyn, like all of us 'horse crazy' enthusiasts, her love for horses runs deep!
Passionate, resilient and graced with class & an irresistible charm; Katelyn is definitely a leader for female riders in the racing industry, and we welcome her as our newest StrideFree female ambassador. Katelyn will be joining the likes of French successful jockeys Oliver Peslier & Oliver Placais who are leading the way for jockeys riding in StrideFree all over the world.
Sitting down we get up close and personal, discover the highlights, lessons and dreams of this young jockey on and off the track!
RACING IS IN YOUR BLOOD! TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY HISTORY AND WHAT THE DECIDING FACTOR WAS FOR YOU TO FOLLOW THE PATH OF BEING A JOCKEY?
It sure is.. Lucky enough for me my whole family have been jockeys. My brother Andrew, cousin Jordan and myself are 4th generation jockeys. I was destined to be a jockey from a very young age.
YOU ARE THE GRAND DAUGHTER OF VERY WELL RESPECTED WINNING JOCKEY MICK MALLYON, AND YOUR MUM WAS A JOCKEY TOO. WHAT ARE THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM THEM?
My Pop Mick Mallyon was one of the best jockeys in his time. He was also known as being one of the toughest, resilient riders and a real hard task master which he has passed on to me. I'm also lucky to have had my mum Mary Mallyon go through the hard yards of being a female jockey in such a male dominated sport. She has taught me to have a thick skin and take the good with the bad.
IT IS INTERESTING THAT THE EQUESTRIAN INDUSTRY IS VERY FEMALE DOMINATED BUT THE RACING INDUSTRY IS MORE MALE DOMINATED. HOW DO YOU FEEL THIS IS CHANGING? AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THESE FACTORS ARE?
Yes your right but the times are definitely changing. Females have always been around the racehorses especially as strappers, but now there are a lot more females riders and jockeys. I think weight plays a major factor into why this is happening, as the boys are slowly getting bigger and there are more opportunities given to females.
SPRING CARNIVAL IS FAST APPROACHING! WHAT ARE YOU GOALS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR?
My next goal is to outside my metropolitan claim, which I have only 6 winners to go to achieve this. I'm looking forward to spring time it's always a very exciting time of year for the industry. Hopefully I can be given an opportunity to be able to get amongst the action.
WHO HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE HORSE TO RIDE SO FAR?
My favourite horse is Black Vanquish trained by Tom Hughes Jnr who provided me with my first black type win at Caulfield in the Thoroughbred Club Cup.
BECOMING AN AMBASSADOR FOR STRIDEFREE, IS VERY EXCITING FOR PETER HOROBIN SADDLERY AS WE LOVE TO SUPPORT RIDERS WHO ARE LIKE MINDED. OUR FOCUS IS EQUINE BACK HEALTH ALONG WITH TOP QUALITY & CUTTING EDGE DESIGN. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE STRIDEFREE SADDLES YOU LOVE?
I think that the new stride free saddles are amazing! The fact that they can allow the horses to move freely and stretch out to the maximum without any restriction really helps my job. I knew this the first time I ever rode in one when I piloted Charmed Harmony to victory at Caulfield just recently.
DO YOU HAVE LUCKY CHARM OR A MOTTO/FAVOURITE SONG OR ANYTHING THAT GETS YOU PUMPED UP BEFORE YOU HIT THE TRACK ON RACE DAY?
Eminem / lose yourself- gets me pumped up Raceday. ️
TELL US WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL?
My dad is my role model. Having been a jockey he knows exactly what I go through therefore he knows how to help me through good and bad times. He also is my harshest critic when I ride a bad race.
Katelyn rides in a StrideFree Aero (185g) StrideFree 600g-700g & a StrideFree 1kg with a matching lead bag.
